The city of San Marcos cited tooth decay prevention as the reason for fluoridating its water systems. The fluoride additive previously used by the city to treat its water system is hydrofluorosilicic acid. Approved by the National Sanitation Foundation International and the American National Institute Standard 60 for use in public drinking supplies, hydrofluorosilicic acid is a water-based solution. It is the most used fluoride additive in fluoridated water systems in the U.S.
